MIX NOTES

Another gig with DJ Afro AKA Jose “Cheo” Pardo, this time outdoors at the very awesome Caracas Arepa Bar in Rockaway Beach. It was a perfect July day with lots of groovy people and families and beach bum weirdos. Mostly just a hang out crowd, but weirdly enough, everyone started dancing when Cheo played “Native New Yorker” (!). We played two records each for most of the day, aside from the part where Cheo schooled me on “Romantic Salsa”, which is an era of salsa from NYC and PR from the late 80s/early 90s that I know noting about. I get by with my Fania standards, which are timeless classics in NYC, but my knowledge of Latin music past the early 80s is paltry at best. I’m also just starting to dig into psychedelic Chicha from Peru as a result of these sets (the Los Diablos Rojos song above, for one). All the more reason to keep playing more gigs with my dude. Thanks for listening and get it in this weekend, cuz tomorrow is not the least bit promised.
